A Case of Abdominal Actinomycosis
Abstract
Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative and granulomatous bacterial infection. The three major clinical presentation include the cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominal regions. The diagnosis is seldom made preoperatively because of no reliable or
consistent clinical features and the relative infrequency of the disease. It may be suggested by the rapid formation of a fixed mass with fistulae. The diagnosis is often based on histologic demonstration of sulfur granules in pus from fistulae
or
surgically resected specimen. treatment has consisted of long-term antibiotic therapy coupled with surgery, including incision and drainage of abscesses with removal of persistent sinuses.
We present a patient with abdominal actinomycosis suggesting terminal sigmoid colon cancer.
